Hi, my name is Dustin and I just recently became involved in the world of track and field.  Actually, my senior year of high school (2008-09) was the year i decided to try shot put for the first time in my life.  Like anyone would suspected I was not that good to start off, only throwing 38 to 40ft and not learning the glide until half way through the season.  Then as the year progressed I found that I really loved this sport and just kept on lifting and practising and at the end of the season I think I became really good.  I finished the season getting 2nd at my sectionals and 9th at my regionals acheiving my PR of 50ft 4in.
Currently I am a freshman at a DIII college (2010-11) and a walk-on to the track team.  I have begun to learn the rotationl form and have been throwing around 47/48ft in practise with the 16lb shot.
Now my question, If I were to have been more well known in high school what kind of scholarships might have been available or still might be available to me.  Please post anything that you would think to be helpful on my quest to figure this out.
                     Thanks, Dustin

I'm not an expert, nor did I end up persuing DIII throwing, although I could have.  I ended up concentrating on guitar/business/drinking at a D1 school.

That said,

1.  D3's usually don't give full rides for throwing.
2.  any scholarship, of any kind means they own you.

I was approached by a couple of D3's, but it didn't fit.  I was too much of a drunken rockstar in my own mind, and I had only enough discipline to do decently in my school work.

I tend to agree with Gene. A 50' 12lb is not too valuable, but your question can never be truly answered. If you started as a freshman and hit 50 as a sophmore, 55 as a junior and 60 as a senior you'd get SOME money. My thrower last year was US#8 discus at the end of his season and he got 80% scholarship WITH a terrific ACT score. It's tough, but if you can get 55 or 56 with the 16lb you'd be living well.
